SCOTT ROTH

  Executive Director, IATSE Local 800

Scott Roth was named Executive Director of the Art Directors Guild, Local 876, in September of 1997, responsible for negotiating and enforcing the Guild’s contracts and administering all of its business affairs.

In September of 2003, following a merger with Scenic, Title and Graphic Artists (IATSE Local 816), Roth became Executive Director of the newly re-named Art Directors Guild & Scenic, Title and Graphic Artists. The merged unions then became IATSE Local 800.
Roth’s appointment followed two previous stints as a labor lawyer: from 1978-81, he served as West Coast Counsel for the National Association of Government Employees, and from 1983-88 he was Associate General Counsel for the Directors Guild of America. In both cases Roth arbitrated labor claims and negotiated collective bargaining agreements. In addition, he played a key role for the DGA as a negotiator and principal drafter of its 1987 Basic Agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Roth also served as a Hearing Examiner with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) from 1981-83; from 1988-89 was Vice President of Business Affairs of J2 Communications, a home video production and distribution company; and was a business affairs negotiator for NBC Productions from 1989-90. From 1990 to 1997 he maintained a private law practice, specializing in employment law, labor relations matters and the representation of talent and production/distribution companies.

Roth was born in Queens, New York. He graduated from the State University of New York at Binghamton and obtained his law degree from UCLA. He is married to Grace Reiner, a lawyer and Vice-President, Legal Affairs for the Disney Channel. They have two children, Griffin, 18, and Shane, 16. Both, so far, show little inclination to become lawyers.
