Additional sponsors include ILM, DreamWorks Animation, X:Media: Lab, Adapt/Montreal, the Hollywood Reporter, Below the Line, Design Cinema, The Scenographer, the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, and fmx.

PANEL PREVIEW #2: "NARRATING SPACE"

Our second featured panel, 'Narrating Space', contemplates the science and fiction of where virtual and material environments meet. The panelists will explore what happens to the experience of architectural form, volume, navigation, materials, urban context, authorship and the communities that they create when they are projected into a digital world. When architecture no longer has to be concerned with physical, financial and geographic constraints, it looks to filmmaking, story telling and other forms of media for its limitations and context. Questions arise about visualization, aesthetics, vernacular, plasticity, audience and interaction. Narrating Space hopes to answer some of these and ask a lot more.

Peter Frankfurt

Panel Moderator
Peter Frankfurt serves as creative director and managing partner of Imaginary Forces, the multidisciplinary communications, entertainment, and design firm he co-founded in 1996. Some of his most high-profile projects include the design of a branded experience for BMW, collaborating as a founding member of United Architects on The World Trade Center redesign project, and creating the plot-integral pre-vision sequences in Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report."

In 2001, TIME Magazine named Greg Lynn one of the 100 most innovative people in the world for the 21st century. In 2005, Forbes Magazine named him one of the ten most influential living architects. Greg Lynn has been at the cutting edge of design in both architecture and design culture in general when it comes to the use of the computer. The buildings, projects, publications, teachings and writings associated with his office have been influential in the acceptance and use of advanced technology for design and fabrication.

Paola Antonelli

Paola Antonelli joined The Museum of Modern Art in 1994 and is a senior curator in the Department of Architecture and Design. Her first exhibition for MoMA, Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design (1995), was followed by several others, covering all facets of architecture and design in the contemporary world. Her most recent exhibition, Design and the Elastic Mind, was devoted to the relationship between design and science, to the changes in scale and pace that we experience in our everyday life, and to design's fundamental role in helping us cope with them. Her ultimate goal is to make design the most loved, understood, and celebrated subject of the XXI century.

Additional Panelists still to be announced will complete this inspiring and groundbreaking panel.

New City by Imaginary Forces

Contemplating architecture, cinematic storytelling, visualization and interactivity, this panel, inspired by a recent collaboration at the Museum of Modern Art, embodies all the core discussion of the 5D conference.

Design and the Elastic Mind, conceived and curated by the renowned Paola Antonelli, was a survey of the latest developments in the field of design and science. It focused on designers' ability to grasp momentous changes in technology, science and society - changes that will demand or reflect major adjustments in human behavior and convert them into objects and systems that people understand and use.

New City
New City

Commissioned by Antonelli for her new show, New City was an installation envisioned and authored by Peter Frankfurt, co-founder and creative director of Imaginary Forces; Greg Lynn, architect and prinicipal of Greg Lynn Form and Alex McDowell, production designer and founder of matter art and science.

New City

Blurring the boundaries between the real and virtual world, New City is the first architecturally considered web-based virtual environment that explores the future of immersive design. A laboratory for experiments in visualization, information, simulation and experience, this is a natural extension of our planet and a place to blend science with fiction.

Our world has forever been shaped by our perception of it. Experiences of flat space drew a flat world. Discovery and innovation lead to an understanding of the earth as a rotating sphere. In its next iteration, our virtual world is a manifold - a surface that forever folds onto itself, capturing endless dimensions of space and time. That is the space of New City.

New City

This is a place for architectural, environmental and social experiments. Here cinematic storytelling, design, science, interactive media and architecture will visualize and play with the historic, the present, the latent and potential.
